Angelica Extract: Helping Women's Physiological Health

2025 03/09

A study conducted in the United States showed that women who started menstruating after the age of 12, had menopause after the age of 50, and had a childbearing life of more than 40 years were more likely to live past 90. The study, which followed 16,000 ethnically diverse postmenopausal women from the Women's Health Initiative for 21 years, found that 55% of them lived past 90. The results showed that women who fell into these categories were less likely to have certain health problems (such as coronary heart disease) and were generally healthier - which could explain the longer life expectancy findings. Interestingly, the study also showed that women who had their periods later were also less likely to smoke, another factor that could affect their future health and life expectancy, as well as being less likely to have a history of diabetes.

Another study also found that premature menopause (defined as menopause before the age of 40) was associated with a 53% increased risk of all-cause mortality and a nearly two-year reduction in life expectancy compared to women who did not experience premature menopause. Premature menopause also increases a woman's chances of developing diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, asthma and breast cancer. Therefore, menopause is usually a turning point in women's health and a critical period that determines whether a woman lives a long life.

There is a Chinese herbal medicine, known as "women's ginseng" and "blood tonic". It was first recorded as a medicine in Shennong's Herbal Classic and was called Danggui. In medical books, it is known as "Nine out of Ten Prescriptions are Danggui" and is revered as the "King of Medicine". It is Danggui.

What is Angelica Extract?

Angelica extract is a herbal extract extracted from Angelica sinensis, a perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family. It is warm in nature, sweet and spicy in taste, and enters the heart, spleen, and liver meridians. It is widely distributed in many provinces and regions in China, among which Minxian County, Gansu Province has become the main production area due to its high quality and abundant output. Angelica sinensis is a traditional medicinal and edible plant, and has long been used to promote blood circulation, moisturize the intestines, regulate menstruation and relieve pain, and treat female menstrual disorders and amenorrhea.

Angelica Extract

Since the 1970s, more than 140 compounds have been isolated and identified from dried angelica root extracts. The active ingredients in angelica roots include polysaccharides, phthalides, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and coumarins. Among these compounds, the most representative active ingredients are angelica polysaccharides, ligustilide, and ferulic acid, which are usually abundant and are used as quality markers for evaluating angelica.

Polysaccharides

Angelica polysaccharides are water-soluble active ingredients in angelica, which play an important role in blood tonic, immune regulation and metabolic regulation. Most of the polysaccharides isolated from angelica are heteropolysaccharides, mainly composed of monosaccharides such as glucose, galactose, arabinose, rhamnose, fucose, xylose and galacturonic acid.

Volatile oils

Volatile oils are the main source of angelica's unique aroma and the main component of angelica. They are mainly composed of benzofuran compounds, terpenes, phenolic compounds and alkane compounds, among which benzofuran compounds are the main active ingredients.

Organic acids

Several key organic acids have been identified in angelica by extracting and identifying active ingredients, including fatty acids, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, coniferyl ferulate and ferulic acid. Among them, ferulic acid is one of the earliest active compounds identified and isolated from angelica, and it is still the main organic acid component in this medicinal material. It is reported that organic acids such as ferulic acid have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Angelica Root Health Benefits for Women

Regulates Hormone Levels

Danggui extract is able to regulate estrogen levels (whether estrogen levels are too high or too low), strengthen the uterus, improve uterine tone, and regulate the menstrual cycle. Danggui is also a blood tonic in traditional Chinese medicine and has been shown to increase red blood cell count, which is helpful after menstruation ends because blood can be replenished more quickly. It increases blood flow to the reproductive system and reduces congestion and pain; it is traditionally used to improve stagnant conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and uterine fibroids. Danggui is often used with other Chinese herbs to improve menopausal symptoms. A recent randomized placebo-controlled study examined the effects of combining dong gui with chamomile and found significant differences between the experimental and placebo groups in relieving hot flashes, insomnia, and fatigue. The researchers concluded that dong gui is effective in improving menopausal symptoms without any side effects.

Bone Health

Osteoporosis particularly affects menopausal and postmenopausal women, in part because of the dramatic drop in estrogen levels during menopause. Studies show that dong quai helps strengthen bones by stimulating bone cells to form bone. In an in vitro study published in 2002, dong quai was found to have a bone-remodeling effect on human bone cells. Dong quai extract acts on osteoblast precursor cells (an important component involved in bone formation), and the herb stimulates bone remodeling by enhancing protein secretion and collagen synthesis in bone tissue. Researchers reporting in 2024 in ACS Central Science reported that they had discovered and fully replicated a compound from dong quai that had potent anti-osteoporotic activity in cell tests.

More health benefits of Angelica

Anti-oxidant raw material

Recent studies have shown that Angelica polysaccharides have a strong scavenging effect on free radicals in the body, can regulate the activity of phenoloxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase, reduce malondialdehyde, and relieve the body's oxidative stress response. Angelica polysaccharides can protect the body from oxidative stress by improving the antioxidant capacity of body tissues, and are also important for beauty and anti-aging.

Improved digestion ingredients

Angelica extracts have also been found to have a gastroprotective effect, which can protect the mucous layer covering the digestive tract and prevent excessive gastric acid production. When this mucous layer is reduced due to excessive gastric acid, it can lead to chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. If not treated in time, small cracks will appear in the stomach and small intestine. These are often called peptic ulcers.
